چکیده

From a detailed analysis of marine and terrestrial aerosol tracers in the NGRIP ice core we identified two distinct glacial atmospheric flow patterns. The climate transition from Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5) to MIS 4, at approximately 75 kyr BP, marks a shift between two different atmospheric flow regimes. Before this transition, during 5 MIS 5d-a, the state of atmospheric flow was alternating between the two modes of different flow patterns, while a more persistent flow pattern was prevailing through the glacial period afterwards. These changes are accompanied by strong changes in an independent Greenland ice core proxy, namely the deuterium excess from the GRIP ice core, reflecting changes in the hydrological cycle and moisture source temperatures 10 as well. The changes in atmospheric flow pattern are correlated with changed extent of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) deposition in the North Atlantic, indicating that the state of the atmospheric flow was highly sensitive to the waxing and waning of the Laurentide ice sheet.

Late glacial stage and holocene tropical ice core records from huascaran, peru.

Two ice cores from the col of Huascarán in the north-central Andes of Peru contain a paleoclimatic history extending well into the Wisconsinan (Würm) Glacial Stage and include evidence of the Younger Dryas cool phase. Glacial stage conditions at high elevations in the tropics appear to have been as much as 8 degrees to 12 degrees C cooler than today, the atmosphere contained about 200 times as ...

Author's personal copy Controls on the East Asian monsoon during the last glacial cycle, based on comparison between Hulu Cave and polar ice-core records

Previous studies have suggested a sound chronological correlation between the Hulu Cave record (East Asian monsoon) and Greenland ice-core records, which implies a dominant control of northern hemisphere climate processes on monsoon intensity. We present an objective, straightforward statistical evaluation that challenges this generally accepted paradigm for sub-orbital variability. We propose ...

340,000-year centennial-scale marine record of Southern Hemisphere climatic oscillation.

In order to investigate rapid climatic changes at mid-southern latitudes, we have developed centennial-scale paleoceanographic records from the southwest Pacific that enable detailed comparison with Antarctic ice core records. These records suggest close coupling of mid-southern latitudes with Antarctic climate during deglacial and interglacial periods. Glacial sections display higher variabili...

Glacial/interglacial changes in mineral dust and sea salt records in polar ice cores: sources, transport, deposition

Sea salt and mineral dust records as represented by Na and Ca concentrations, respectively, in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores show pronounced glacial/interglacial variations. For the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) mineral dust (sea salt) concentrations in Greenland show an increase of a factor of approximately 80 (15) compared to the Holocene and significant shifts by a factor of 15 (5) during D...

INTegration of Ice-core, MArine, and TErrestrial records (INTIMATE): refining the record of the Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition

INTegration of Ice-core, MArine and TErrestrial records (INTIMATE) is a core project of the INQUA Palaeoclimate Commission, the primary goal of which is to synchronise records of the Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition (LGIT). Through a series of international workshops, INTIMATE has encouraged direct collaboration between scientists with interests and expertise in a wide range of palaeoenviro...
